Filippi make two performance level racing boats:
- The Italia 2
- The Italia S
Both types use the same moulds and internal fittings, the manufacturing
process is also the same and is supported by the ISO 9002 quality
award. The difference is in the core material used.
The Italia 2
The Italia 2 uses termanto sandwiched between two layers of carbon
fibre, this provides a strong, durable boat, ideal for club use in
the UK, especially on places like the Tideway or Estuaries where
the chance of hard knocks is very real, even when the greatest of
care is used. If the outer skin of the boat is damaged it is possible
to continue using it since the termanto does not absorb water. Subject
to the size of the boat being build and the mould being used an Italia
2 single weighs approximately 16.0 kilogrammes. It is supplied with
the standard 3 stay Aluminium riggers.
The Italia S
Developed later than the Italia 2 range, the Italia S is Filippi’s
top of the range racing boat using honeycomb as the core material
in construction the Italia S is built to achieve FISA minimum weight,
in the case of the single 14 kilogrammes. The Italia S single
scull also comes complete with a fitted NK stroke coach.
The Rigging Options
There are a choice of rigging options for the Italia
S,
- Standard 3 stay alloy riggers
- Alloy wing riggers
- 2 stay tubular carbon riggers
- Carbon wing rigging
Each rigging type has its benefits and disadvantages:

- Accuracy of adjustment
|
- Expensive to replace if damaged – not for transporting
in trailers under other riggers

Please note all Filippi shoulders are made of composite materials.
The Construction Process
What ever the boat type all Filippi’s are vacuum moulded and
heat cured.
Ø The
vacuum mould process ensures the core materials bond together correctly.
This process takes place while once the shell of the craft has been
fitted in the mould.
Ø Heat
curing take place for a three day period to a temperature of 90 degrees.
This helps provide a tough, durable shell.
